REPORT.
Gentlemen,
I propose to place before you in this Annual Report the
Vital Statistics of the parish for the registration year 1883, which
terminated on the Twenty-ninth day of December last.
The Registrar General has only recently published his corrected
Report on the Census enumeration of 1881, and as the Statistics in
my last two annual Reports were based upon the figures given in the
Preliminary Census Report, which have subsequently been found not
to bo quite correct, I have found it necessary to recalculate the whole
of tho Statistics for 1882, so that they shall compare quite fairly with
those of 1883.
Tho Census Report to which I have just alluded contains some most
interesting information. From it I gather that in 1871 there were in
Bethnal Green 15,899 inhabited houses, 441 houses were unoccupied,
and 90 were in process of building. In 1881 the number of inhabited
houses had increased to 16,606, in addition to these 619 were empty,
and 58 new ones were building. These numbers, however, do not quite
fairly shew the actual number of dwellings, as huge blocks, such as
those of the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company, which have
a common staircase and are really perpendicular streets, count as only
single houses.
