Proceedings of the Vestry of the Parish of St. Matthew, Bethnal Green,
from the 25th March, 1883, to the 25th March, 1884.
SCAVENGING.
The tenders, sent in pursuant to advertisement, for executing
scavenging work and watering from the 10th August, 1883, to the
10th August, 1884, were opened at the meeting hold on the 21st Juno.
The tenders accepted were:—

The total being less by £448 than the total of the tenders for the
previous year.
THE COMPOSITION RATE.
The appeal by the Vestry to the Lords Justices against the decision
of the Queen's Bench Division awarding a peremptory mandamus
commanding the Churchwardens to make a Rate sufficient for all the
purposes specified in the Composition Rate Act, was heard on the
31st July and 1st August, before the Master of the Rolls and Lords
Justices Cotton and Bowen.
Mr. Bompas, Q.C., and Mr. Arnold Morley appeared for the
appellants, the Vestry; Mr. Arthur Charles, Q.C., and Mr. Beven
for the Respondents, the applicants for the mandamus; and Mr. Poland
for the Churchwardens.
Their Lordships reserved their judgment, and did not deliver the
judgment until the 21st December.
