Bakehouses.— There are 97 bakehouses in the Borough, 48 of
which are underground. Two hundred and forty-six inspections
of bakehouses were made during the year and 43 notices were served
requiring the cleansing of walls and ceilings.
Other Food Premises.— The occupier of a grocer's shop was
prosecuted for failing to observe due cleanliness in regard to articles
of food in that he permitted loaves of bread to be deposited in the
shop porch and thus exposed to contamination. The maximum
fine of £1, with two guineas costs, was imposed.
A licensed street trader, who dealt in poultry, was proceeded
against for (a) failing to have legibly and prominently displayed on
his stall his name and address, (b) failing to cause refuse arising
from his business to be placed in suitable covered receptacles, and
(c) failing to take reasonably necessary steps to guard against
contamination of the food exposed or offered for sale. Fines and
costs totalling £1 8s. 6d. were imposed.
A prosecution was also taken against the occupier of a shop
where food is prepared for sale (poultry) for failing to observe due
cleanliness in regard to his shop and utensils, and for causing to
be thrown or laid upon the footpath a quantity of rubbish. Fines
and costs totalling £2 Is. Od. were imposed.
