Residential Treatment of Tuberculosis.—Prior to 1st April, 1933.
the London County Council's tuberculosis scheme provided only for
the treatment of tuberculous persons at the County Council's special
tuberculosis hospitals and at certain voluntary sanatoria, whilst cases
of tuberculosis treated in the County Council's local general hospitals
were dealt with as poor law cases. Thus, consideration of a patient's
ability to contribute towards the cost of treatment was considered
by the Tuberculosis Care Committee when the patient entered a
special tuberculosis hospital or a sanatorium and by the Public
Assistance Department of the County Council when the patient
received treatment in a local general hospital.
The revised scheme of the County Council which came into
operation on the date mentioned above provides for the residential
treatment of tuberculous persons whether at the special tuberculosis
hospitals, at voluntary sanatoria, or at the local general hospiials,
and the Tuberculosis Care Committee undertake the investigation
of the financial position and the assessment and collection of
contributions in all cases treated under the scheme.

The number of persons who received treatment during the year under the County Council's tuberculosis scheme is given below-
