The results obtained from the proper treatment of measles is
not merely that death is escaped, but that invalidism, which may
culminate in tuberculosis, or impairment of vision or other crippling
weakness, is prevented.
Influenza.-During 1933 there were 109 deaths in the Borough
from this disease.
This is an increase of 65 as compared with the number of deaths
from this cause registered during 1932. The annual mortality-rate
from influenza is 0.50 per 1,000 inhabitants, as compared with 0.51
for London and 0.57 for England and Wales.
Diarrhoea.—The total number of deaths from this cause was
33, and of these 24 were under one year of age. The number of
deaths from this disease in 1932 was 29. The annual mortalityrate
for diarrhoea and enteritis during the year is 0.15 per 1,000
inhabitants.
Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this cause during the year
numbered 10. This is a decrease of 3 upon the number registered
during 1932. All of these deaths occurred in children under five
years of age. The mortality for Hackney is equal to 0.04 per 1,000
inhabitants, and that for London 0.08 per 1,000 inhabitants. The
nurses of the Hackney District Nursing Association attended 5 cases
and paid 87 visits.
Information was received from the headmasters and headmistresses
of elementary schools in Hackney of 212 cases occurring
among their scholars during the year, whilst 265 cases came to the
knowledge of the Department from other sources.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.

Cancer.—There were 326 deaths during 1933 due to malignant
disease. This is a decrease of one upon the number registered
during 1932. The mortality-rate from malignant disease for last
year was, therefore, 1.52 per 1,000 inhabitants.
