in the mortality from " local diseases " arose chiefly from the
reduced number of deaths from inflammatory diseases of the
lungs which was so fatal in 1879, but this was partially counteracted
by the large number of deaths from brain diseases.
Although the deaths above 85 were not so many as usual,
yet the number of those who died above 80 years of age was
somewhat in excess of the average, as 99 deaths between
80 and 85 were registered during the year, against 74 in 1879.
There were 30 deaths registered between 80 and 81 years of
age; 23 between 81 and 82; 16 between 82 and 83; 13
between 83 and 84; 17 between 84 and 85. After that age
the number diminished rapidly, 10 deaths only having been
registered between 85 and 86 years of age; 11 between 86
and 87; 3 between 87 and 88; 9 between 88 and 89;
11 between 89 and 90; 8 between 90 and 91; 1 each between
91-2 and 92-3; 2 at 93-4; 1 between 94 and 95; 1 between
95 and 96; and 1 at the very unusual age of 104 years. This
last named death occurred at such an advanced period of life,
that I made special enquiries concerning it, and ascertained
that the deceased was a Jew, a general dealer, who was born
in July, 1775, and died in June, 1880, from paralysis, at the
Jews' Asylum, in Well Street, South Hackney.
