The populations of the sub-districts given above, have been
calculated from the census just taken. For comparing the
population with the deaths in different sub-districts, the percentages
are those of the whole population, less the inmates of
the Hackney and City of London Unions and the German
Hospital. A similar plan has been adopted with the deaths,
for it would have given erroneous results to have calculated the
death rate of the Hackney sub-district, including all the deaths
in these Institutions, because the death rate of the whole district
was about 2 per cent., and in these Institutions more than 20
per cent. The table shows that the death rate was below the
average in Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, and Hackney subdistricts,
and above it in West Hackney, and especially in
South Hackney These results are similar to those obtained in
1860 and 1861, having been but little affected by the increased
number of inhabitants in South Hackney or in Hackney.
