eating mussels and other shell-fish. I also sent round to all the fishmongers
and induced them not to buy mussels during the month of
October. The withdrawal of mussels from consumption, whatever may
have been the cause of the spread of the disease, was followed by a
diminution of the cases. In this district shell-fish is pretty universally
eaten during the autumn months, and I feel convinced that many of our
cases of Enteric Fever have an origin in that way.
The number of cases notified during 1900 was 101, as against 111 last
year. The deaths from this complaint were 21 this year, and 23 last year.
The annual mortality per 1000 living was 0.17.

Phthisis.
The deaths from this disease were 286 during the year.
The annual death rate per 1000 living was 2.21.

Deaths from Phthisis during the last 10 years:—

During the last five years it has been our practice to visit and
examine every house in which a person has died from Phthisis. Disinfection
of rooms after Phthisis takes places in about two-thirds of the total
deaths from that complaint, viz., in more than 200 cases in the year.
