In 1942 your Medical Officer drew the attention of your
Worshipful Committee to the duties imposed on Port Health Authorities
in the matter of crew and passenger.accommodation in ships, pointing
out the time and energy expended by your Inspectors in carrying
out the work of maintaining the best sanitary conditions possible
within the limits prescribed by statute.
He also reviewed the many difficulties that.have arisen as
the result of the special circumstances imposed on shipping by wartime
conditions, and expre-ssed the opinion that, having regard to
these' conditions, the. standard of crew accommodation was as good as
can be expected, and if difficulties were found the owner in the
great majority of cases did his best to remedy them as far as he
could, at the earliest possible moment.
The matter was considered by your Worshipful Committee this
year when the following Resolution was adopted:-
"That it be recommended to the Grand Committee that the
"Town Clerk be requested to address a letter to the
"Ministry of War Transport stating that in the opinion
"of the Corporation of London, as Port of London Health
"Authority, improvement could be made in the construction
"of new ships in the general arrangements for the welfare
"of the crew, if the blue prints were submitted to expert
"medical opinion in the Ministry before the plans were
" approved".
The matter will be again reviewed during the coming year in
the light of the reply received from the Ministry of War Transport.
