During the early part of the year the attention of your Medical Officer was
called to large quantities of condensed milk of a well-known brand, which were
being discharged within the district of the Port of London Sanitary Authority
from Rotterdam.
The milk was reported to have been sold on the Continent several years
previously to Germany, and was re-shipped to this country via Rotterdam.
The milk was found to have been manufactured in Australia, Canada, America
and other countries, and apart from the fact that a few of the tins were "blown,"
to outward appearance the milk appeared to be in good condition, but on internal
examination a considerable quantity of the milk showed signs of age, inasmuch
as it was lumpy and fermenting and, as the tins bore labels specially commending
the milk for feeding infants, it was deemed advisable to place the goods under
detention for careful detailed examination.

The milk rejected as unsound was graded and the better portion released
under guarantee for the manufacture of confectionery, the remainder being released,
also under guarantee, for cattle and poultry feeding.
During the year, the undermentioned foodstuff was submitted for bacteriological
examination and reported upon as follows:—

During the year, the following foodstuffs were submitted to the Analyst,
who reported as follows:—
Tinned Tomato Sauce *Contained 6.83 grains per pound of tin.
