ss. Hunstanworth —Malaria.—This ship was extensively noted in the
daily press. She arrived during the thick fog on the 16th November, at the mouth
of the Medway from Rufisque, West Africa, and was unfortunately fog-bound.
The whole of the crew were suffering from Subtertian (Malignant) Malaria, only
about four men were really capable of work and some were in a very serious condition.
Six of the most serious cases were received into Denton Hospital and brought
under the curative influence of quinine, in one case only with difficulty.
Dr. Watson, practising in Sheerness, took charge of the ship for Dr. Legge as
far as the Port Sanitary Authority were legally concerned. Dr. Legge being conlined
to his house by reason of a rather serious anginal condition.
In accordance with precedent, which was agreed by your Worshipful Committee
during the War, I have consented to the reception at Denton, of cases of malaria,
which, as in the present instances, are in urgent need of being brought under the
influence of quinine and shall issue to these on discharge a supply of the drug for
the completion of their cure, defraying this last expense from the Samaritan Fund.
The procedure in general has the approval of the Ministry of Health and of
your Worshipful Committee.
