The value of this artificial sunlight as an aid to health is now
well recognised. Most of the London Boroughs possess solaria for
the irradiation of children and expectant mothers attending their
child welfare and ante-natal clinics, and those at Marylebone, Fulham,
Bermondsey, Finsbury, Deptford, Southwark and Lewisham have been
inspected by the Medical Officer of Health. Members of the Public
Health Committee have also visited the Solarium at Fulham. Solaria
are preventive health institutions designed for group irradiation of
12 or more children simultaneously, and differ materially from the
arrangements provided in hospitals for the irradiation of single cases
requiring special curative treatment. Beddington and Wallington has
now come into line with other progressive health authorities and the
Solarium referred to in last year's report is an established fact. It
was ready to be opened in the summer but the visitation of the flying
bombs resulted in some damage to the room and eventually the
Solarium was opened by the Mayoress on September 18th.
Between that date and the end of the year 261 individual patients
have received treatment and there has been a total of 3,105
attendances.

The table below gives details of the attendances month by month: —
