* In the above Table the years 1863, 1869, 1873 and 1880, consist of 53 weeks.
In the column of deaths for 1879,1880 and 1881, the deaths from small-pox and from fever, which occurred in the Hospitals, are included,
†Scarlet-fever and diphtheria in the earlier records of the Registrar-General were not separated, but were classed under one
heading, viz.: scarlet-fever. For some years past these diseases have been recorded under separate headings.
‡The deaths from scarlet-fever during this year were 26 and from diphtheria 9. In London, the deaths from scarlet-fever were
2118, and from diphtheria 654.
