The deaths from epidemic diseases to the total mortality are in the proportion
of 21.8 per cent. In the corresponding Quarter of last year the
proportion was 33.4 per cent. From consumption the proportion is 12.4 per
cent.; and from old age and premature decay, 3.6 per cent.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age are 250. This is 41.0 per
cent, of the total mortality. In the previous quarter of last year the rate of
mortality of children under 5 was 49.2 per cent. In the Artillery sub-District
the rate is 70.0 per cent.; in the Spitalfields, 56.9 per cent.; in the
Mile End New Town, 41.2 per cent.; in the Whitechapel North, 56.6 per
cent.; in the Whitechapel Church, 18.1 per cent.; in the Goodman's Fields,
69.2 per cent.; and the Aldgate, 51.8 per cent.
The number of deaths which have not been certified by a medical practitioner
has been 17; of these, 10 were recorded in the Spitalfields subDistrict.
Three deaths occurred in the London Hospital, which are recorded as
being uncertified, in consequence of a jjost mortem, examination having been disallowed.
One of these was that of a labourer aged 30, who was admitted
with constipation and vomiting, and died in a state of collapse.
Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended, during the last
Quarter, 3585 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse, including 33 of
small-pox, 75 of measles, 27 of scarlet-fever, 39 of hooping-cough, 646 of
diarrhoea, 66 of fever, 4 of choleraic-diarrhoea, and 19 of erysipelas. In
the corresponding Quarter of the previous year, the number of pauper
cases of illness was 3525, including 2 of small-pox, 54 of measles, 135 of
scarlet-fever, 90 of hooping-cough, 560 of diarrhoea, 1 of choleraic-diarrhoea,
72 of fever, and 13 of erysipelas.
Meteorology of Greenwich.
The Returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the Quarter has been 4.50 inches. During the corresponding
Quarter of last year the rain-fall was 4.40 inches. The mean
temperature of the air was 68.8° In the corresponding Quarter of last
year the mean temperature was 61.5° The hottest days during the
Quarter were Friday, the 8th, and Monday, the 25th July, and Thursday,
the 21st August, when the thermometer indicated respectively 89.7°, 88.8°,
and 88.1°. In the week ending September 10th, the rain-fall was 1.33
inches.
