tioner has been 20; of these, 12 were recorded in the Spitalfiolds sub-district.
The Eegistrar for this sub-district makes a note to the effect that the majority
of the certificates are informal, that is to say, the certificate of death has not
been given in accordance with the form prescribed by the Registrar-General,
although the certificates were signed by a duly qualified mcdical practitioner.
Two deaths occurred in the London Hospital which are recorded as being
uncertified in consequence of a post mortem examination having been
disallowed.
Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended, during the last quarter,
3647 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse, including 3 of small-pox,
34 of measles, 27 of scarlet-fever, 2 of diphtheria, 32 of hooping-cough, 109
of diarrhoea, 61 of fever, and 18 of erysipelas. In the corresponding quarter
(14 weeks) of the previous year the number of pauper cases of illness was
3885, including 2 of small-pox, 30 of measles, 37 of scarlet-fever, 71 of
hooping-cough, 105 of diarrhoea, 137 of fever, and 25 of erysipelas.
Meteorology of Greenwich.
The returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the quarter has been 3.97 inches. During the corresponding
quarter of last year the rain-fall was 8.02 inches. The mean temperature
of the air was 36.8°. In the corresponding quarter of last year the mean
temperature was 41.3°. The coldest days during the quarter were Friday,
the 11th, and Friday, the 18th February, when the thermometer indicated
respectively 19.4° and 19.6°.

Water Supply.
The system of constant water supply to the poorer districts of the
Metropolis ought to be insisted on by the several local Boards; for it is the
only plan which will give the poor a sufficient quantity of wholesome water
