On referring to the tabular summary of house improvements, it will be seen that 476
houses have been systematically visited during the quarter, making a total of 4713 ; and that 83
cesspools have been abolished making a total of 1342 since the formation of your Board. The
sanitary condition of Russell Court, Slater's Court, Three Tun Alley, Wentworth Courts (East
and West) and Saw Yard, have been improved by the laying down of new pavement. The
nuisance arising from keeping swine has, in 11 instances, been removed. A summons was taken
out against the Eastern Counties Rail way Company, for the defective drainage and filthy condition
of Blobbs Court, Canterbury Court, and Wood's Yard, when, upon evidence being adduced of
the disgusting and unhealthy state of these localities and honses, the Magistrate made an order
for the necessary sanitary improvements to be forthwith carried into effect. A summons was
taken out by Mr. Coward against a man living in Froetic Court, for obstructing the scavengers
in the removal of the dust. The penalty for this offence, according to the 126th Section of the
Metropolitan Local Management Act, is a sum not exceeding £5, but owing to some extenuating
circumstances, the fine was remitted.
The cow-houses and slaughter-houses are from time to time visited by your Inspectors
and myself, and notices for limewhiting and better drainage, &c., are served when necessary.
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JOHN LIDDLE.
15, Great Ame Street.
Not, 8th, 1853.
