DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION.
An increasing proportion of the immunisations are being
done by the private practitioners. It will be seen that this year
326 out of a total 682 were so done. Incidentally, the total
number of immunisations being done has fallen during the past
few years, and while this may to some extent be because the
number of births has also fallen it is a position that we must keep
constantly under review.
A considerable proportion of these immunisations are combined,
that is to say, they contain the antigens of both Whooping
Cough and Diphtheria.
NOTE.—Since this report was written the Medical Research
Council have published the report on their investigation
and this has provided reliable evidence of the efficacy
of Whooping Cough Immunisation.
VACCINATIONS.
The National Health Service Act, 1946, did away with
compulsory vaccination in infancy and our success now depends
on the public enthusiasm for the measure as a precaution against
Smallpox.
During the year the following number of vaccinations were
carried out:
Vaccinations 549
Re-vaccinations 131
Of the above 450 were vaccinated by Private Practitioners.
438 of these vaccinations were primary vaccinations in infancy.
