Deaths from coronary disease of the heart have been increasing
over the past ten years and it is of interest that out of 96,
only 31 were female and 65 were male: this is a complete reversal
of the position in vascular disease of the brain, where out of a
total of 74, 56 were in the female and only 18 male.
Of the 151 deaths from Cancer, in 25 the site was in the
bronchus or lung. Only two of these 25 were female. Statistics
show that there has been an increase in the mortality from this
cause in recent years. There does not seem to have been any
occupational influence discernible among these 25 deaths; scrutiny
of the death returns shows that they had a wide diversity of
occupation.
There were 25 deaths only from T.B. This is again a reduction
in the number of deaths from this disease. Further reference
is made to this subject on page 61.
Ninety-eight persons survived to 80 years of age or over. Of
these 17 only were certified as having died from old age. Fourteen
old people celebrated their 90th birthday; in only three of these
was old age given as the cause of death.
There were 9 deaths during the year from road traffic accidents,
none of them involving children.
It may be of interest, also, since gastric and duodenal ulcer
are believed to be more common in recent years, that there were
five deaths where one or other of those diseases was given as the
cause. Two of them were attributed to gastric ulcer and three to
duodenal ulcer. Only one of these deaths was in a person under
55 years of age.
There has been an increase in the number of deaths from
violence in the Groups 33, 34 and 35 in TableVI. Suicides number
8 as against 7 last year, road traffic accidents were responsible
for 9 as compared with 4 last year, and deaths attributed to all
other violent causes this year number 16 as against 13 last year.
The graph on page 21 shows the analysis of deaths from these
causes over the past 20 years.
