POPULATION.
(Registrar General's figures 75,790).
The most recent available estimated figure for our population
is 75,790, which is again above the estimated figure for
last year and represents the highest population figure ever recorded
for the area. Next year, when the census return is available,
we shall have the first actual population figure since 1931. The
natural increase of population, that is to say the excess of births
over deaths, was 229, the lowest figure since 1933. In 1947 it
had reached the high level of 734, so that in three years it has
dropped to one-third of its peak level.
BIRTHS.
There were 938 registered live births in the area during the
year and there were 18 stillbirths, making a total of 956 births.
The number of registered live births at 938 is a further drop on
last years' figure, which was the lowest since 1941, and the birth
rate at 12.38 approximates the lowest figures ever recorded at
12.3 in 1933 and 1937. Our total live births have fallen by
over 400 in the past three years; that is to say they are less than
two-thirds of what they were three years ago.

The appended table shows the comparision since 1937.
