MATERNAL MORTALITY.
The maternal mortality rate for the year 1949 is Nil. It
has been pointed out before that dealing with small figures such
as those provided by our population, a single death is reflected
in the mortality rate by more than 1 per thousand. For this
reason we have published the rates for the past 20 years. These
figures will be found in the table below. It will be seen
that we have had a Nil mortality 3 times in the past ten years
and that only 3 times in that period has it been above 1. In
the 20 years ended this year there have been 40 maternal deaths
and 18,977 births. This expressed as a rate gives an overall
rate for the period of 2.11.
