In addition to closely co-operating with our own Day
Nurseries, the Health Visitors have attended at the routine
medical inspections of nursery children in the schools, to afford
assistance to the School Medical Officer and Head Mistresses of
the schools with their more intimate knowledge of these
children.
Convalescent Home Treatment. Children requiring treatment
are sent to Convalescent Homes through the agency of
the Invalid Children's Aid Association, to whom the Council
makes a contribution towards the cost of the treatment.
Orthopædic Treatment. Children suffering from orthopaedic
defects are referred to the Nelson Hospital under the
general arrangement with that Hospital for the treatment of
children attending the Welfare centres.
Maternity Hospital Treatment. Complicated cases requiring
in-patient treatment are referred to hospitals locally, while
cases complicated by pyrexia received treatment at the Wandle Valley Isolation Hospital.

During the year 209 maternity cases were admitted to the
Nelson Hospital and 439 to the St. Helier County Hospital.
Cases admitted to other hospitals, institutions and nursing homes
numbered 275, making a total of 923, or 71.5 per cent. of the
total births.
Emergency Maternity Unit. There were no calls made on
this unit during the year under review.
Consultant Service. A specialist's opinion may be had in
cases of obstructed labour, emergencies in pregnancy, or
puerperal pyrexia.
Home Help Scheme. The Council employs an organiser,
two full time home helps and ten part time. It will be seen by
reference to the tabulated statement below that 115 cases were
dealt with during the year of which 72 were under the Maternity
