2. The County and Public Assistance Hospitals. In
addition to the voluntary accommodation described above, there
is available to the district various County Hospitals. St. Helier
Hospital with a bed complement approaching a 1,000, is only
just outside the boundary and both Kingston and Epsom
Hospitals are within five miles or so.
St. Helier Hospital, which is destined to be the key hospital
for this and neighbouring areas, at an rate for some years, has
795 medical and surgical beds and 97 maternity beds.
Tuberculosis. The County Sanatorium, Milford—300 beds.
The Surrey County Council is responsible for the AntiTuberculosis
Scheme in the district. The County Sanatorium
at Milford constitutes the main institutional provision, and
17 persons were admitted from Merton and Morden during the
year, whilst 64 other persons received treatment in other
institutions.
In Surrey, as in other counties, the Sanatoria accommodation
is inadequate to meet the present demands made upon
it. Every effort is being made by using other accommodation
and by selection of cases, to mitigate the shortage which, as
mentioned elsewhere in this Report, is largely contributed to
by shortage of nursing staff.
