Health Visiting. The increased number of births in 1943
has necessitated a greater number of primary visits and visits
to infants under one year of age. It will be observed that
there were 3,025 visits to children under 1 year of age as
compared with 2,731 last year; and there were 489 first visits
to expectant mothers as compared with 461 last year. In
consequence of the increased demand on the Health Visitors'
time by the additional births and larger number of expectant
mothers, the number of visits of children aged 1 to 5 has
fallen, as has the number of special and total visits.
The number of visits made for various purposes was as
shown below:—
To expectant mothers—first visits 489
total visits 750
To children under 1 year—first visits 1,218
total vists 3,025
To children 1-5 years—total visits 3,929

In addition to closely co-operating with our own Day
Nurseries, the Health Visitors have attended at the routine
medical inspections of nursery children in the schools, to afford
assistance to the school Medical Officer and Head Mistresses of
the schools with their more intimate knowledge of these
children.
Convalescent Home Treatment. Children requiring treatment
are sent to Convalescent Homes through the agency of
the Invalid Children's Aid Association, to whom the council
makes a contribution towards the cost of the treatment.
Orthopaedic Treatment. Children suffering from orthopaedic
defects are referred to the Nelson Hospital under the
general arrangement with that Hospital for the treatment of
children attending the Welfare centres.
