In addition 21 houses and flats were in course of erection
at the end of the year.
Council's Housing Scheme. The number of houses erected
or acquired by the Council under statutory powers is 540, as
shown in the report for 1937.
The position with regard to applications for tenancies was
as follows:—

An eligible applicant is one with a family
resident in the district.
Housing Act, 1936—Overcrowding. During 1939, 18
dwellings were decrowded. In the same period 11 new cases
of overcrowding came to notice. The net reduction in overcrowded
dwellings during the year was therefore 7. Since the
number of overcrowded dwellings at the beginning of the year
was 36, the number remaining still overcrowded at the 31st
December, was 29. The number of persons occupying theSe
29 dwellings was 2074 equivalent adults.
