The Registrar General's figures relating to population
and deaths differ in some instances from those compiled from
local information. Where classification, e.g. on ward basis,
as between age groups, etc. has been attempted in this report,
it is necessarily based on local information. These tables may
in the aggregate differ from the totals given by the Registrar
General.
POPULATION.
The Registrar General has, in view of the prevailing war
conditions, provided separately computed population figures
appropriate for the calculation of birth rates and the calculation
of death rates or incidence of notifiable diseases.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the mid-year population
is:—
(a) For the calculation of birth rates 72,150
(b) For the calculation of death rates or incidence
of infectious diseases 71,220
the estimate in respect of 1938 was 68,980.
My own estimate, computed from local knowledge, is
77,350.

The estimated population of the wards is as follows:—
