Unemployment. The number of Merton and Morden
residents registered at the Wimbledon and Sutton Exchanges
as unemployed at the beginning of 1939 was as shown below.
They do not, of course, represent the total of unemployed
since not all are registered at these two Exchanges.

Public Assistance. The following information as to
Public Assistance is supplied by the courtesy of the Chief
Public Assistance Officer of the Surrey County Council.

The number of admissions to hospitals shown above is
more than 100 less than a year ago. In this connection it
should be observed that several of the hitherto Public Assistance
Institutions were appropriated by the County Public
Health Department during the year and consequently numerous
admissions to hospital were made direct under public health
arrangements which are not shown in these figures.
