REMARKS.
The results show this water to be of a high degree of organic and
bacterial purity and quite satisfactory for drinking purposes.
There are two deep wells in the district, the supplies from
which are used mainly for industrial purposes. They also
provide the staffs of the factories at which they are situated
with drinking water. Drawn from beneath the London clay,
both these well waters are of a high degree of organic purity.
Drainage and Sewerage. Further progress was made
with the Surrey County Council Scheme for the improvement
of the Pyl and Beverley Brooks referred to in my last report.
The Pyl was widened on the Battersea Cemetery land and the
Beverley at West Barnes Lane. The latter stream was culverted
near Rookwood Avenue whilst bridges at Garth Road
and Blakes Lane were reconstructed. The culverting of the
Pyl from West Barnes Crossing to Kingsway is in hand.
Local measures undertaken for the relief of flooding include
the provision of a further surface water sewer in Cannon
Hill Lane to relieve Northway and the adjoining area.
Faulty lengths of the old soil sewer in Burlington Road
have been reconstructed.
Rivers and Streams. The River Wandle, the Pyl and
Beverley Brooks and the other natural watercourses are visited
periodically. The results of these inspections are given in the
Sanitary Inspector's Report on Page 51.
Closet Accommodation. All premises have water closets
drained to sewers except four which are drained to cesspools.
In addition there are four chemical pail closets on Sports
Grounds.
Public Cleansing. House refuse is collected weekly.
Trade Refuse is also collected on payment of a moderate
charge. Disposal is by incineration at the Garth Road
destructor which is a six cell plant.
One additional 8 cubic yard Morris Collection vehicle was
acquired during the year.
The practice of dusting bins with a disinfectant powder
was continued.
Sanitary Inspection of the Area. The work of the
Sanitary Inspectorate during 1938 is detailed in the report
of the Chief Sanitary Inspector which follows:—
