Vermin Control
Persons.
The instances of personal infestation with vermin have now for a
number of years, been gratifyingly few. The Council's Cleansing Station
in Rochester Road which was used extensively during the war for the
treatment of scabies and pediculosis, is now only used occasionally for
the odd family which is so affected. The year 1961 was the first in which
no cases were dealt with at the Cleansing Station since it was opened.
Premises.

During the year 102 premises were treated for the destruction of vermin and insect pests as follows:—

Clean Air Act, 1956
The Council's programme drawn up in February 1960 is designed to
create smokeless zones at the rate of one per year until the whole district
is covered in a period of 10 years.
The first Smoke Control Order became operative on the 1st October,
1961. This involved work of fireplace adaptations at 229 Council houses
and up to the end of 1961 489 grant payments were made for the same
purpose in respect of privately owned dwellings. A number of grants
are still outstanding.
In July, 1961 the Council made their second Smoke Control Order
to come into operation on the 1st October, 1962. The limits of this area
were as set out in the report for 1960.
The survey of the second area was completed during the year and
work was commenced on the survey of the third area which adjoins the
second and is bounded on the north by the district boundary with the
Merton and Morden Urban District, west of the intersection of Green
Wrythe Lane and Bishopsford Road, on the west by the boundary with
the Borough of Sutton & Cheam as far south as Westminster Road, on
the south by a line along the rear of the houses on the north side of
Westminster Road along the centre of Thornton Road to its junction
