An examination of the Registrar-Generals statistics relating to the sex and age distribution of the civilian population in the administrative areas of England and Wales at 31st December, 1947, provides the following information:—

These figures show that the average age of Carshalton's population
is 33.9 years and that of Surrey as a whole, 36.9 years. Children under
15 in Carshalton represent 22.7% of the total, whilst in the whole
county they represent 20.6%. Old people over 65 years of age form
7% of the total population of the urban district and 11.3% of the county
as a whole. Women of reproductive age represent 46.6% of the total
females in Carshalton and 43.2% of those in the whole of Surrey.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births in 1949 fell to 825 from 962 in the year
before, providing a birth rate of 13.2 per thousand population compared
with 15.5 in 1948. Of the total, 451 were males and 374 females.
Information available from the registration of births is not complete
as to the home addresses of the parents. For computation of ward
birth rates, therefore, use is made of the notifications of birth received
under the Public Health Act, supplemented by the Registrar's weekly
returns of registrations. From these sources it is known that 841
