Cerebro-Spinal Fever.
Only one case of meningo-coccal meningitis was reported in a
child of nine years. She recovered completely after chemotherapy
in hospital.
Anterior Poliomeylitis and Encephalitis.
The epidemic wave of infantile paralysis of 1947 was fortunately
not repeated in 1948. Four cases were notified, one of which was a
patient in St. Helier Hospital, admitted there for treatment from Morden
already suffering from the disease. The incidence of this disease was,
therefore, 0.04 per 1,000 population.
One case was an adult woman of thirty years, who died after
five days' illness. Another was a child of four, who is still undergoing
treatment for some residual weakness of one leg. The third case, was
a boy of fourteen years, who had extensive paralysis below the waist.
He is still in an orthopaedic hospital, but can now walk with the aid of
sticks.
