Erysipelas.
Sixteen cases were notified, eight of which received hospital
treatment. All but one were residents.
The face was the site affected in 11 of these and two of the infections
were in respect of the same person, whose condition relapsed ten
clays after discharge from hospital. All recovered.
Pneumonia.
Notifications of pneumonia at 56 were 15 less than in the year
before. Those of influenzal origin numbered four. Two-thirds of the
total werp adults of twenty or over.
Measles.
Following a year of low incidence, it was expected that 1948
would conform to the accepted pattern of the periodicity of measles
in the London area and show a high prevalence of this infection. The
rising wave commenced in February, reached its peak in March and
continued at a gradually falling level until August. A total of 955
cases were notified, 918 of which were residents of the district. This
is the highest yearly total recorded since 1939, when the disease was
first notifiable. In spite of this high prevalence, there was not a single
death.
