Ten further cases occurred in hospitals.
Diphtheria.
As in the year before diphtheria incidence was very low. Out
of 27 cases only seven were residents in the district giving attack
rates as follows : —
All cases 0.51 per 1,000 population.
Residents 0.12 per 1,000 population.
Five of the eight wards were entirely free of diphtheria throughout
the year.
It should be observed that 20 of the total of 27 notifications
were in respect of Queen Mary's Hospital patients and that no
information is available as to whether the diagnosis was subsequently
confirmed in these cases.
One noteworthy feature of the illness among the resident population
was that four of the seven cases were over 15 years of age,
only three being of school or pre-school age. None of these cases
died though one adult contracted the infection whilst in a mental
institution outside the district and died therefrom.

The incidence of diphtheria among the resident population since 1934 was as follows : —
