Consultant Service.
The services of an obstetric consultant which are available under
the Scheme for the emergencies of pregnancy and complications of
labour were called upon in only one instance. This was a notified
case of puerperal pyrexia which developed endometritis.
Emergency Maternity Unit
This service, whereby skilled obstetric and nursing assistance,
together with transportable equipment, is available for dealing with
maternity emergencies in the patients' homes was established on the
advice of the Ministry of Health. It is operated in conjunction with
the maternity facilities of the War Memorial Hospital, but has not
yet been called upon.
Maternity Outfits.
Sterilised outfits for use during confinement are supplied under
the Scheme at cost price, or less than cost price, according to means.
24 were issued during the year, 4 free of cost, one at half-price and
19 at cost price.
Home Helps.
Domestic assistance may be secured under the Scheme for mothers
with young children during confinement or under other special circumstances.
The contribution of the mothers is fixed by income scales.
In the year under review the number of Home Helps supplied was
51, in respect of 16 of which no charge was made^ the remainder on
part payment. This service is extending year by year and is becoming
a prominent feature of the Scheme.
Midwives.
Two midwives are appointed by the District Council under the
County Council's Scheme for the provision of a salaried midwifery
service formulated under the Midwives Act, 1936.
