The Registrar General's statistics relating to population and
deaths differ slightly from those compiled from local records.
The total figures in respect of the district as a whole, which are
supplied by the Registrar General, are set out in this report but
where comparative figures, e.g., as between wards, age groups, etc.,
are shown or classification attempted, these are necessarily taken
from local records and may show slight discrepancies in the
aggregate compared with the Registrar General's totals.
POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the mid-year resident
population is 58,730.
My own estimate, compiled from local information, is 61,560.
The average age of the population at the census of 1931 was
among the lowest of the districts in Surrey. Since that date, the
Carshalton portion of the St. Helier Estate has been developed
with the result that the district has since received a large influx of
young married people displaced from London and it is probable
that the average age is now lower than in 1931. This factor at the
present time probably outweighs the tendency towards an annual
lowering of the population per house, which is the experience
generally of the country as a whole, and it is likely that it will
continue to do so for a few years to come.
The distribution of the estimated population as between wards
is as follows :—
