Dwellings.—At the Census, 1921, there were 6,605 inhabited dwellings,
occupied by 6,994 private families; there were in addition 47 other occupied
dwellings.
Of the 6,605 occupied dwellings
544, or 8 per cent., contained 1—3 rooms
3,387, or 54 „ ,, 4—5 ,,
1,657, or 25 ,, „ 6—8 ,,
and 817, or 13 ,, „ 9 or more rooms.
Six of the dwellings which contained 1—3 rooms, 224 of those
containing 4—5 rooms, 111 of those containing 6—8 rooms, and 25 of the
remainder were occupied by more than one family; in 23 of the houses
there were three families.

The following Table shows the number and percentage of families occupying from 1 to 5 rooms, and over 5 rooms, with the respective populations and the percentage of the whole population in private families, and the corresponding percentages of families and population in 1911:—

About 900 families of 2 or more persons, with an average of 3.3 persons
per family, occupied tenements of less than 4 rooms, and 1,566 families,
with an average of 4.1 persons per family, occupied four-roomed tenements.
The average size of families in the District was 4.16, as against 4.38
in 1911.
In 1921, 39 one-roomed tenements, 34 two-roomed tenements, 29 threeroomed
tenements, 37 four-roomed tenements, and 11 five-roomed tenements,
or 150 in all, were occupied under conditions of more than 2 persons per
room, and their occupants formed 3.4 per cent. of the population in private
families. In 1911 there were 79 such tenements, containing 2.8 per cent.
of the population.
Rateable Value.—The rateable value of the District at Michaelmas,
1925, was £321,320, and the amount represented by a penny rate was
£1,283.
Social Conditions.—The District is mainly residential and agricultural.
There are no large works; bricks, tiles and pottery are manufactured in
various parts of the District, there are engineering works at Bookham, a film
factory and leather works at Ashtead, and a factory for the manufacture of
fireworks at Cheam.
