(1) Natural and Social Conditions of the District.

Area and Population .—The area of the District is 3,508 acres.

The population of the District at each'Census, 1891 to 1921, was as follows:—

It was estimated by the Registrar-General at 6,013 persons for the
year 1925.
Physical Features.—The south-eastern part of the District,
including the greater part of the town, is situated on the chalk on the
northern slopes of the Downs; the northern and western parts,
including The Common, are on the London Clay; an intermediate part,
about one-fifth of a mile in width, is on the Thanet Sand and the
Woolwich and Reading beds of the Lower London Tertiaries. The
slope of the ground is mainly from the 400-ft. contour line on the southeastern
boundary to the river Mole to the west, on the 100-ft. contour
line; the town is for the most part below the 200-ft. contour line. The
Common and Kingston Road district are about 130-ft. above sea-level,
and to the north of this the ground again rises to a height of about
200-ft.
Inhabited Houses and Families.—At the Census, 1921, there
were 1,161 inhabited houses—of which three contained two dwellings
each—occupied by 1,271 private families, 93 of the houses containing
two familes, and seven containing three families. There were in
addition seven other occupied dwellings.
Of the 1,164 occupied private dwellings
