(7) Maternity and Child Welfare.
In the five years only 4 cases of Puerperal Fever were notified, and one
of these, which ended fatally, was admitted to the Union Hospital from
Banstead. There was 1 death among Epsom patients, in 1924. Twelve
cases of Ophthalmia were notified, 2 of which were treated in the Union
Hospital and 2 were removed to the St. Margaret's Hospital; in one case
there was slight cloudiness of the cornia, but this appeared to have cleared
up subsequently, and all the others made good recovery. There were 4
deaths from Whooping Cough, 1 death from Measles, and 6 deaths from
Epidemic Diarrhoea, 3 of which occurred in 1921, among children, all under
one year of age. Three of the deaths from Whooping Cough occurred in
1925. No case of Poliomvelitis in young children was notified.
