Milk Supply.—There are 31 Purveyors of Milk registered, of whom
21 reside in the district; seven of them are cowkeepers. A large
proportion of the milk is delivered in bottles.
Frequent inspections of the cowsheds and dairies were made,
and one dairy was repaired, four dairies were limewashed, and three
cowsheds were cleansed, under notice. One cowshed was undergoing
extensive re-construction at the end of the year with a view to the
production of graded milk.
The Veterinary Inspector paid 94 visits to cowsheds, and made
310 examinations of cows, but discovered no case of tuberculosis.
Three principal and three supplementary licences to retail certified
milk were issued during the year. No graded milk is produced in
the District.
Meat.—(Many visits were paid at the time of slaughter, and the
carcases were examined, and 271 carcases were passed, viz., beasts,
32; calves, 14; sheep, 118 ; lambs, 14 ; and pigs, 193.
The carcase of a sheep was found to be unfit for human
consumption, and was destroyed.
A very high proportion of the meat consumed in the district is
brought from the wholesale markets of Smithfield and Croydon.
When the Meat Regulations first came into' force there was some
difficulty in obtaining compliance with them, but the Inspector reports
that every assistance is now given, and all reasonable precautions
against contamination are taken. One butcher has given notice of
definite times of slaughter, and the required three hours' notice is
given in all other cases. On two occasions the Inspector dealt with the
unsatisfactory condition of vans used for the transport of meat.
There are 13 purveyors of meat in the District.
The number of slaughter-houses in use in the District at the
undermentioned dates was In
