SOCIAL CONDITIONS.
Mitcham has an area of 2,935 acres, and during the last decade
has shown very rapid development. In 1923 the population was
36,430, which in 1933 had increased to 60,060. Not only has the
residential part of the district increased rapidly but the industrial
side has also made great progress. There are a large number of
paint and varnish works in the district and also several large
chemical and rubber works. A full list of industries is given under
the section dealing with Factories and Workshops.
Slums in the true sense of the word are practically unknown,
i.e., houses without a separate water supply, separate water closet
accommodation, separate yard, and no through ventilation. There
is a row of back to back houses in the district, but a method of
dealing with these is under consideration. Caravan yards exist, but
