THE 1961 CENSUS
The analysis of the Census for the County of Middlesex, published by the Registrar
General, includes the following details relating to Tottenham. For comparison, where
appropriate, figures for Middlesex as a whole are given in parenthesis.
Population
The 1961 population, 113,249, is 13,680 less than in 1951 when the last census was
taken, representing a decline in population at the rate of 1.13 (0.15) per cent per annum.
The density of population expressed as persons per acre is 37.6 (15.0).
Age Distribution
The continued trend towards a larger proportion of aged persons in the community
reflects the lower birth rates in the preceeding 25 years and the improved expectation of
life resulting from better living conditions and advances in preventive and curative
medicine.
