I am indebted to Miss Esther Richards, M.S., F.R.C.S., for
the followin report on the ante-and Post-Natal work:—
Ante and Post Natal Care.
The volume of work undertaken at the clinics, though
slightly less than in the previous year, due no doubt to the
renewal of air raids and evacuation, still stretched the services
to full capacity.
The work undertaken in these difficult circumstances was
only made possible by the excellent co-operation of the health
visitors, midwives and domestic staff at the clinics.
With a rising birth rate, 19.09 as compared with 17.85
in 1943, it is gratifying to find the number of still births reduced
from 70 to 54 and the maternal death rate reduced 2.94
to 1.41. The health of the mothers has been well maintained,
and the babies reflect the value of good nutrition and special
dieting in pregnancy.
