TUBERCULOSIS
On 31st December 1958, there were on the register nine
hundred and thirteen cases of Tuberculosis, of whom eight hundred
and one were Pulmonary and one hundred and twelve non-pulmonary,
In 1958 there were eight deaths from Pulmonary Tuberculosis,
The death rate was 0.10 per thousand of populations as against
0.06 in 1957, There were two deaths from non-pulmonary
Tuberculosis, giving a death rate of 0.025 per thousand of
population For England and Wales the death rate for Pulmonary
Tuberculosis was 0.09 per thousand of population and for nonpulmonary
Tuberculosis 0.01 per thousand of population,,
The number of new cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis was thirty
three, compared with thirty two new cases in 1957. Residual foci
of infection still persist, particularly among the middle aged
and elderly, and Intensive search will be necessary to eliminate
the disease. The use of B.C.G vaccine in adolescent children
gives a high measure of protection, Five hundred and six
children received injections in 1958, The response rate was
67 per cent.
Four new cases of non-pulmonary Tuberculosis were notified
in 1958, compared with three new cases in i957, Infections of
glands bones and Joints and serous membranes are caused by the
human or bovine types of the bacillus In this Borough all milk
Is designated or pasteurised.
The Tuberculosis Care Committee is a valuable organisation
not only in relation to the specific service which the Committee
performs in promoting the well being and reablement of patients
suffering from Tuberculosis, but also as a model for the
extension of care to patients suffering from other disabling
diseases. The Committee provides additional nourishment,
clothing and bedding Grants are made to provide occupational
therapy Holidays are arranged for children, mothers and
convalescent patients. The voluntary services of the members
