Sample No.Article SampledinfringementAction Taken
1982 (Informal)Chicken Broth ConcentratedThe broth prepared according to the printed instructions would only contain 0.6% of protein, whereas canned chicken broth of ordinary commercial quality intended for use without dilution contains not less than 1% of protein. The article was therefore deficient in protein to the extent Of 40%investigation revealed that the broth which was of Danish manufacture had been in stock for over four years. The remainder of the stock which consisted of four tins was immediately withdrawn from sale,
1984 (Informal)White Wine VinegarThis article was under-acetlfled with the result that the acetic acid content was low and the alcohol content abnormally high. (Acetic acid 3.5% W/V and Alcohol 6.5% W/V). Wine Vinegar of ordinary commercial quality contains between 5 and e% W/V of acetic acid.A firm of Wine Merchants imported a good quality French Sauterne Wine for bottling The wine fermented and therefore became unsaleable as wine. The liquid was allowed to "mother" and tum naturally into white wine, and bottled in the usual manner through a filter. The Wine Merchants regretted the incident and declared that this was the only occasion over many years of trading in wines that fermented stocks of this kind had been sold by them as White wine Vinegar. The few remaining bottles were withdrawn from sale.
2007 (Informal)Cheese SpreadArticle contaminated by Mould growth. The chgese was wrapped in metai foil, but mould growths had developed at both ends of the block. it would appear that this was an isolated case as the remainder of the stock was found to be in satisfactory condition.
2019 (Informal)Cornish Clotted Cream.Labelling Infringement, This article had neither the appearance, the taste, nor the texture of genuine clotted cream, It consisted of a thick sterilised cream and had not been prepared by the traditional methods of scalding, cooling and skimming. The sample contained 53.7% milk fat and 3.8% milk solids other than fat.The investigation into this case created lengthy correspondence on account of the many parties involved and varied points at issue. Agreement was eventually reached as to the type and wording to be incorporated in the declaration which would be suitable and acceptable for the new labels to be printed.
