TUBERCULOSIS.
On 31st December, 1945, there were on the register
732 cases of Tuberculosis, whom 576 were Pulmonary eases and
156 non-pulmonary cases. The death rate from Pulmonary
Tuberculosis was 0.48 per 1000 of population, and for nonpulmonary
tuberculosis 0.10. The total Tuberculosis death
rate in 1945 was 0.58 compared with 0.72 per 1000 of population
in 1944. The corses ponding leath rotes for England and wales
in 1945 were: Pulmonary, 0.52 per 1000 of population; nonpulmonary,
0,10 per 1000 of population. Total rate. 0.62 per
1000 of population.
The number of new. cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis
notified fell from 86 in 1944 to 71 in 1945. The fall was
amongst females of all age groups excepting the adolescents,
who showed an increase of three cases. The number of new cases
of non-pulmonary Tuberculosis was almost halfed. It is premature
to attach any significance to this decline. Modern aids to
diagnosis and early treatment will in time reduce the number of
new cases, but, for the present, the greatest hope of reduction
in incidence lies in the early provision of adequate housing,
and increase of Sanatorium accomodation.
The Sutton and Cheam Tuberculosis Care Committee has
given very useful service during the year in helping to solve
the social and financial problems affecting many families. This
social service has been extended and expedited by the efficient
work of the Lady Almoner, and Surrey County Council are accepting
a wider responsibility for the essential needs of patients. The
scheme of allowances continued to operate beneficially.

The following table shows new cases and deaths in age groups.
