GENERAL PROVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH
SERVICES FOR THE AREA.
Legislation.— The Factory Act, 1937, became
operative on 1st July, 1938.
Public Health propaganda.- The series of Health
Days arranged under the National Health Campaign
at approximately monthly intervals was concluded
in March, 1938. On 25th June, 1938, a display of
propaganda literature was arranged in association
with the Fete of the Sutton and Cheam Labour
Party, and a similar display was included in the
Fete of the Sutton and Cheam Hospital on 9th
July, 1938. Exhibitions of physical culture were
given at the latter event by the gymnastic section
of the Sutton Adult School and by the Women's
League of Health and Beauty to whom thanks are
due for their ready support. A "Youth Drive" was
organised by the Sutton and Cheam Council of
Social Services on 15th, 16th and 17th July, 1938.
All these efforts helped to stimulate interest in healthy
living as the basis of happy community life. The
action of the Council in promoting the use of the parks
for plays and dancing during the summer has induced
a wider appreciation of the value of open spaces.
Nursing Associations.— There are three nursing
associations in the Borough named after the
respective districts of Sutton, Cheam, and Worcester
Park, which employ a total of sixteen nurses.
The increased staff necessitated by increased work
has in the cases of the Sutton Association and
Cheam Association required the provision of better
accommodation. The new home of the Sutton Nursing
Association at Hampden House, Sutton Court
Road, Sutton, was officially opened on 19th
October, 1938. The Cheam Nursing Association
