Residential Schools for Physically Handicapped Children
There were two children placed in residential schools, one at St. Michael's, Eastcote and the other
at Tylney Hall near Basingstoke.
children with speech defects
There were, at the end of 1969, 781 boys and 274 girls who suffered from a speech defect and were
receiving speech therapy. 771 of these children attended Brent Primary and Secondary day Schools and seven
Independant Day schools. 277 of the children were under five years of age.
No speech defects are included in this group arising from deafness.
delicate and diabetic children
At the end of 1969 there were 39 boys and 16 girls ascertained as in need of special schooling in
this group. Twenty-one of the children attended day schools amongst which were John Keats and Wood Lane
Schools in the Inner London Education Authority and Hazelbury School in the London Borough of Enfield
Two children were placed as delicate at Grove Park School.
The residential schools attended by the 31 children placed out of London include Tylney Hall,
Nr. Basingstoke, Suntrap School, and St. Patricks School, Hayling Island, St. Dominies School, Surrey, Elmers
Court, Lymington, Park Place, Henley-on-Thames, Port Regis School, Broadstairs, St. Stephens School, Kent.
One child was placed at Palingswick Diabetic Hostel, Hammersmith.
