The number of complaints received during the year regarding unsound food
was 105. These included references to extraneous matter in food and a detailed
investigation was made in each case. Informal action was taken in the majority
of cases, but in two instances it was necessary to institute legal proceedings.
Particulars of these proceedings are referred to later in this Report.
The complaints of extraneous matter in food included the following:-
Maggot in packet of scone-mix.
Mould in packet of suet.
Maggots in slabs of cooking chocolate.
Mould growth in loaves of bread.
Foreign matter in wrapped pork pie.
Nail in loaf of bread.*
Foreign matter in bottles of milk.
Safety-pin in bottle of orange drink.
Poppy seeds in loaf of bread.
Larvae in bread roll.
Colour in cooked cauliflower.
Mould growth in pork pie (2).*
Wasp in bun.
Foreign matter in loaves of bread.
Glass in loaf of bread.
Maggots and larvae in box of chocolates.
Nail in butter.
Foreign body in tin of luncheon meat.
Foreign matter in sultanas.
Foreign matter in tin of fruit salad.
