SECTION EL - GENERAL PROVISION OF
HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE AREA
LABORATORY FACILITIES
The Ministry of Health Public Health Laboratory at Epsom, is available
for the examination of samples of milk, ice-cream and water and of any pathological
specimens. Almost al1 specimens submitted for bacteriological
examination from this Department are sent to the Public Health Laboratory
at Epsom.
In addition, the staff is always available to assist the Medical Officer
of Health in field investigations in the case of epidemics or outbreaks of
food poisoning.
The Laboratory at the Nelson Hospital, Merton, is also used by the
Department, and is also available to general practitioners for the examination
of pathological specimens.
The Central Public Health Laboratory, Colindales N.W.9, is available for
advice, special immunising agents and special investigations.

Samples of milk and water requiring chemical analysis, and also Food and
Drug samples are sent by the Corporation to the Public Analyst, D.D. Moir,
M.SCo, F.R.I.C., Southwark Street,, S.E.lo Biological examinations of milk
are carried out at the Royal Institute of Public Health and hygiene Laboratory,
Queen Square, W.C.l.
PUBLIC HEALTH ACT 1936, PART IV, - NURSING HOMES
The Wimbledon Borough Council is responsible for the registration and
supervision of Nursing Homes in the Borough. Thirteen visits of inspection
were made during 1960.
No new Nursing Homes were registered during the year, but an application
to increase the number of patients to be provided for was received from one
existing Nursing Home, and this was approved. One Maternity Hospital and one
Home for unmarried mothers were exempted, on sin annual basis, from registration
under Section 192 of the Public Health Act 1936.
