MATERNAL riORTALITY
No deaths in childbirth, either from puerperal sepsis or other maternal
causes, were recorded during the year. Only three maternal deaths have
occurred in the Borough in the last ten years.
The maternal mortality rate for Si gland and Wales per thousand live and
still births was 0.39°
The estimated midJ.960 female population for England and Wales age 15-44
was 9,049,000.
As stated there were no maternal deaths in Wimbledon during i960.
INFANTILE MORTALITY
During 1960 there were 17 deaths among infants under one year of age,
compared with 20 in 1959 and an average of 13 in the last ten years. Two of
the deaths were in respect of illegitimate children.
The resultant infant mortality rate for Wimbledon per thousand live
births was 19<.20. The infant mortality rate for England and Wales in 1960
was the low record of 21.7, the lowest previously recorded being 22.2 in 1959.
Five of the deaths were due to congenital malformations or birth injuries
and three were due to prematurity. Four children died from pneumonia, one from
acute nephritis, one from pyelonephritis and one from embryoma of the liver.
One of the remaining 2 deaths was due to lack of attention at birth, and the
other one was an accidental death.
The number of neo-natal deaths (i.e. those occurring during the first four
weeks of life) was 14, giving a neo-natal death rate of 15.9 per thousand live
births, as compared with a rate of 15.6 for England and Wales.
The perinatal death rate (i.e. stillbirths and deaths of infants under
1 week) was 28.9 per thousand live and stillbirths, while that for England
and Wales was 32.9.
