Meat and Other Foods.
There are no slaughterhouses within the Borough. Three slaughtermen's
licences were issued under the provisions of the Slaughter of
Animals Acts 1933 to 1954, during the year 1958.
Food and Drugs Act, 1955.
The inspection of food premises under the provisions of the Food Hygiene Regulations 1955 has formed an important part of the work of the Public Health Inspectors during the past year. A register of all such premises includes the following :—
Greengrocers | 70 |
Confectioners | 133 |
Ice-cream premises | 214 |
Bakers | 38 |
Grocers | 132 |
Provision dealers | 91 |
Butchers | 46 |
Fishmongers | 25 |
Milk distributors | 36 |
Chemists | 25 |
Licensed premises | 73 |
Clubs | 30 |
Restaurants and Cafes | 83 |
Works canteens | 10 |
School canteens | 47 |
Kitchens (Hospital and Central Kitchens) | 5 |
Food stalls | 11 |
1,069 |
The initial inspection of these premises has been continued during
the year 1958, but the work was still not completed by the end of the
year due to the time spent in the administration of other recent legislation.
By the application of informal measures and by discussions with
owners and occupiers of food premises, no particular difficulty has been
experienced in obtaining compliance with the requirements of the
Regulations. In general, it has been found that food traders within the
Borough are co-operative, and I have reason to believe that the
assistance and advice given by the Department is appreciated.
